KCAT CAN: A mother's strength

A mother's strength

Joann PacaƱa and her husband Michael had their first child Gabrielle Mikhail on Sept. 27, 2011 in Cebu City. She is fondly called Bielle. “Sometime we even call her Pedring because she was born during typhoon Pedring,” Joann quips.

It is only now that Joann could laugh about things after depression took over her life when she learned that Bielle had congenital heart disease.

KCAT CAN: The gift of hearing

The gift of hearing

August 6, 2012

Despite being deaf, I am still so much grateful because my hearing loss did not occur from the time I was born. I was still able to hear the sounds of the world for 22 years.

KCAT CAN: Fixing a broken heart

Fixing a broken heart
by Maria Kathrina Lopez Yarza
July 23, 2012

At some points in our lives, we experience heartbreak from the loss of loved ones. The feeling of loneliness, doom, panic, discomfort, and emptiness seem to break our hearts into pieces.

Well, I have good news. Even with heartbreaks, your heart is still whole.

KCAT CAN: With me in my dreams

With me in my dreams
by Maria Kathrina Lopez Yarza
July 9, 2012

If I’m gone when you wake up, please don’t cry. And if I’m gone when you wake up, it’s not goodbye. Don’t look back at this time as a time of heartbreak and distress. Remember me, ‘cause I’ll be with you in your dreams.”

These lines are taken from the song “With You in Your Dreams”, one of my favorites from Hanson in the late ‘90s. The lyrics are meaningful because they helped me move on during sad times of losing someone dear. I kept on listening to this song after Papa Noning, my maternal grandfather, died 11 years ago.

KCAT CAN: Hello Kidney and Friends!

When I was diagnosed & hospitalized in 2005, Betty one of  the (many many many) friends who gave their support and shared their love with me.

2005. tacK, Adie & Betti
Betti belonged to the batch ahead of me, but because of her condition, she often missed her classes and attended school irregularly.  She was our classmate in some subjects. We became friends and she became a part of our group. She added color to our group with her funny antics and good sense of humor, creative sense of humor that is. It really did not seem like she just came from having being ill and from having an organ transplant. I have admired her since then. Creative. Witty. Funny. Kind.  Giving. And has a stong FAITH in God.

I can say that I knew how Betti felt when she learned that they need a large sum of money for her transplant.

A cheerful heart is a good medicine. — Proverbs 17:22

I was pondering on these words when one of my college friends, Kat Soriano, told me about the current health condition of our friend Catherine “Betti” Sanchez, one of the funniest and strongest persons that I know whose cheerfulness has always been contagious.

The aMAYzing Birthday Project 2012

When I stepped out of the car, I was really surprised with what I saw! The lobby area overflowed with people who were there to join the event. In our previous gift-giving events, it was convenient to meet up in the lobby area of the hospital and organize everything with the volunteers since we were only a little less than 40 people. This year, since we had filled up the main entrance area, we were directed to the PGH quadrangle and organize everything there nstead. Thanks to my family and friends who are the pioneers of my MAY Birthday Project.  They already know very well what should be done and they assisted the new attendees so well.

The PGH Lobby was full of volunteers
Everything felt surreal. The happiness I felt at that moment was even bigger than the previous gift-giving events that we had done in the past 5 years.
